Worked example
A revised project folder
Select Load example above to run this sample in your browser.
Original
original-demo/: keep.txt, changed.txt, removed.txt
Revised
revised-demo/: keep.txt, changed.txt, added.txt
What the result means: The root names are ignored. The result reports changed.txt changed, removed.txt removed, and added.txt added.
How to use it
How to compare two folders
- STEP 01
Choose two folders using a browser that supports folder selection.
- STEP 02
Compare matching relative paths by their file bytes.
- STEP 03
Review and download the path-level difference report.
Check a copied or revised folder
Filename-only checks miss modified files, while folder names may differ even when their contents correspond. The selected root names are removed before paths are matched. This helps inspect a delivered project, a local backup or two exported asset folders without sending files to a server.
What to check in the results
Folder selection depends on browser support. File permissions and empty directories are not compared. Large folders are limited to protect browser memory; no files are uploaded.
For a general line and character comparison, use the text diff tool. The text comparison guide explains a worked example, line counts, and how to keep shared links private.
Common questions
Can I compare folders with different root names?
Yes. The selected root folder names are ignored; files are matched by their relative paths inside each folder.
How does the tool know a same-named file changed?
It reads the selected file bytes locally and compares SHA-256 hashes. A matching path with a different hash is marked changed.
